....It's The Lil' Things That Make Life Sweet....

I finally found a reason to celebrate Merdeka.

It's the unconditional love I (we) have for this country, however flawed it is.

Many have lamented about how there's nothing to celebrate this Merdeka, because the truth is we haven't achieve all that much in 50 years. The fundamentals that were set by our forefathers, are still rocky despite the constant reassurance by our leaders. Much tension can be felt throughout the nation. Lots of pent up anger, disappointment and frustration. We are a troubled nation veiled by a happy front.

At first, I felt the same way. What's there to celebrate? Afterall 50 years and we're still oppressed. So what if we were free from the reigns of our colonial masters 50 years ago? Are we still free from oppression 50 years later?

Does our love for our country ends at nasi lemak, char kuay teow and mamak stalls?

We say we love our country. But why?

I stumbled across this blog yesterday where the writer questioned her readers if they know why they love Malaysia. It's true, many of us say we love this country and when asked to give a reason, our answer usually revolve around the food and the lifestyle. Is that what's keeping us here? The food and the lifestyle? Nothing else?

It made me think. Why do I love my country? I don't know. I just do.

It's an unconditional love that we cannot explain. There is no reason for the love. It is just there. We may complain all day about its flaws and vent our frustrations over the disappointments thrown at us time and time again but our loyalty still lies here.

Deep down inside we want to see this nation succeed. No matter where we are, we are part of this country and we always will be. Like an umbilical cord binding mother and child. We all have an invisible umbilical cord, forever binding us to this place we call home.

If you think about it, though we may not have true racial unity, we do have enough racial tolerance admist us to still keep the country going. And I do think that this tolerance should be celebrated. Because it shows that there is still hope for the nation.

Like Pui Yee said, the only thing dividing our country is not racial divide but a class divide. It's a battle between the visionaries and the short-sighted.

So, here I am all sobered up from yesterday's horrible night out (story for another day) wishing Malaysia on her 50th Birthday, a future free from political immaturity and racial divide. May her children believe in her enough to fight for a future that will shed light on all of us who call ourselves Malaysian.

Selamat Hari Merdeka!
